May 19th (day 1)
Today was a travel day. We left Miami at around 9am and got to Barbados at 1ish. We got off the plane and went to customs and immigration. It was actually a little intimidating talking to the officers because they asked us all these questions and I felt like if I didn’t know the answer then they would think that I had something to hide. I was a little scared! We got our rental car and drove to the place where we shipped our XO laptops. I think we shipped about 40, I can’t remember. On the way to the place, we stopped at Cheffette, a common fast food place. The food tasted kind of like Wendy’s. We got the laptops and then headed to the house that we’re staying in. We unpacked the car and put our stuff in our rooms. We grabbed our swimsuits from our bags and immediately headed to the beach. We swam and tanned there for a couple hours. After coming back to the house, we showered and chilled out. Dinner was at 7 and we had a chef make us dinner. It was amazing. She told us that she is going to have a different theme for us every night. Tonight she had us eat what a typical Bajan would eat for dinner. There was swordfish, chicken, mac & cheese with kale, and plantains. After dinner we talked about what we were going to teach for the next day. Below is a photo of my notes that I took for teaching. I’m super excited that we’re here and very anxious to teach tomorrow!
May 20th (day 2)
A rooster woke us up this morning!!! AT 5:30!! Thankfully, I was so tired that I fell right back to sleep and then woke up again at 7:30 to start getting ready for teaching. We got dressed and headed down for breakfast; I made toast with peanut butter. We decided to leave early today so we could make sure we didn’t get lost and so that we were fully set up to teach. When we got there, we went to the principal’s office and she introduced us to the school kids. The kids were out in the courtyard and that’s where they have morning prayer and announcements. We each got to introduce ourselves in front of them during announcements. They were so excited that we were there. They kept smiling at us. They were also very eager to help. After announcements, some boys helped us carry the laptops in. We carried them to the IT room, where I’m pretty sure they are going to be kept. The students that we were teaching came downstairs and grabbed a computer to take back up to their classroom. We followed them to their classroom and we started teaching. We introduced ourselves more formally first. We said what grade we were in and how old we were. We went through our outline and it went pretty smoothly. We each helped each other out if we forgot to say something. Over all, it was pretty awesome. Whenever something was wrong or needed worked out, we handled it with ease right on the spot. Honestly, we are a great team. After teaching for a little bit, they had a break at 10. This is when we explored the school for a little bit. A lot of the kids waved at us and randomly came up to us and hugged us; it was so cute. We had to say bye because break was over and we had to return to the classroom. We taught some more and then it was lunch time. We were invited to lunch so we stayed and sort of ate lunch. “Sort of” because all of the kids kept coming up to us to talk to us so we had no time to eat. When we first got our food, some boys escorted me to a picnic table and let me sit down with them. One boy started giving Colleen a back massage. They were so cute and kind. I barely got to eat because they all wanted to play and take pictures. I got up and walked around with them. The kids swarmed us! It was so adorable! They asked for our autographs and our numbers. When it was time to go, they wouldn’t let me leave, they kept hanging on to me and hugging me. I think it took like 15 minutes just to say bye. Once I could break free, I went to the car. We drove home and straight to the beach! We stayed there again for a few hours and hung out. I got a little burned, but not bad. Once we got back, we took showers and went to the store to buy some snacks and more breakfast food. Again around 7, Serena came and brought us dinner; tonight’s theme was curry. Again, the food was amazing. Since we don’t have teaching tomorrow, we talked about our plans for Saturday and how we want to spend our day off. So far we’ve talked about hitting the different beaches and going to Animal Flower Cave. We looked at pictures and it looks so pretty so I’m really excited to see it. Pictures to come!
